Nordlys: the life cycle of our products

An exclusive interview with Anne-Sophie Musso, co-founder of the brand

At Nordlys, we don't just create furniture. We are building a future where aesthetics, ethics and responsibility come together.

From our creation in 2021, we wanted to establish Nordlys within a sustainable, human and committed dynamic."From the outset, our mission was clear: to design furniture that is beautiful, durable, and respectful of people and the planet." – Anne-Sophie Musso, co-founder of Nordlys.

Our commitment goes beyond the materials we use or the designs we create. It extends to every stage of our furniture's lifecycle, from its manufacture to its second life in a socially responsible way. Today, our commitment is built on three fundamental pillars:

  • A reasoned and ethical production thanks to sustainable materials and pre-order manufacturing to avoid overproduction.

  • A reflection on the life cycle of our products, with donations to Emmaüs for unsold items and an optimization of our manufacturing chain.

  • Rigorous quality control ensures that each piece of furniture meets our standards.

It is within this approach that our partnership with Emmaüs, our choice of pre-ordering, and our rigor in the selection of our materials and suppliers are situated.

A model of responsible production: pre-ordering as a solution

A pre-order model for responsible and waste-free production

In the furniture industry, one of the biggest challenges is overproduction, which leads to waste, inefficient resource management, and an unnecessary carbon footprint. Too often, furniture is manufactured in excess, stored for months, or even destroyed if it doesn't find a buyer. At Nordlys, we've made a bold choice: to produce only what is needed, thanks to a pre-order model. "We chose pre-ordering to avoid mass production. Producing less, but better, is our commitment," says Anne-Sophie Musso, co-founder of Nordlys.

This model allows us to maintain control over our production, optimize our inventory, and offer our customers furniture that is not simply designed to be sold in bulk, but rather to meet a genuine, thoughtful demand.

How does pre-ordering work at Nordlys?

“Our pre-order system is based on a clear and controlled process, which allows us to offer exclusive collections. As soon as a new collection is ready, we launch an initial limited production run, generally around 50 pieces. This quantity allows us to test demand and avoid unnecessarily producing excessive stock.”

Once this first series is in production, pre-orders are opened. At that point, the furniture is already in maritime transit, which means our customers can order a product for which we already have a clear visibility of the availability date.

If we see immediate success, we quickly launch a new production run, always in reasonable quantities to avoid overproduction. This approach allows us to precisely adjust our volumes, produce only what we need, and adapt our production rate to actual demand.

"It's a bit like on-demand manufacturing, but with optimized management that allows us to be more responsive while remaining responsible," Anne-Sophie continues.

A winning model for the planet and our customers

This pre-order system is not just a management choice, it's an environmental commitment. We decided to adopt this approach for three key reasons:

  • Reduce waste. By producing only the necessary quantities, we limit unnecessary storage and transport, as well as the use of natural resources. Every part manufactured has a specific purpose, and nothing remains in our warehouses without reason.

  • Do not generate an additional carbon footprint. Producing less also means limiting unnecessary transport journeys and avoiding excessive storage, which itself generates additional logistical movements.

  • To bring more transparency to our customers. At Nordlys, we want every purchase to be clear, well thought out, and anticipated.

Of course, this model sometimes involves longer lead times than traditional production methods. Logistical challenges can arise, particularly due to maritime disruptions (strikes, transport delays, geopolitical tensions). But we do everything we can to keep our customers informed in real time. According to Anne-Sophie Musso, "When a delay occurs, we prioritize transparency. We explain the situation and implement compensation if necessary."

Our approach is simple: we prefer an informed and engaged customer to overproduction, which would go against our values. And we are delighted to see that our customers understand and support this approach. Many of them write to us to say they are proud to participate in more responsible consumption and that they prefer to wait a little longer rather than buy mass-produced furniture. "Our customers are not just buyers; they are agents of change toward a more thoughtful way of consuming. And that is a real victory," says Anne-Sophie Musso.

Responsible manufacturing: ethics, quality and commitment

Materials selected with exacting standards

At Nordlys, we ensure that every link in our production chain respects our fundamental values: environmental responsibility, impeccable quality and social ethics.

We choose our materials with the utmost care to guarantee durable, healthy, and environmentally friendly furniture. We exclusively use FSC-certified wood, ensuring it comes from responsibly managed forests, free from excessive deforestation and respecting the rights of forestry workers. Our fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified, a recognized label that guarantees the absence of substances harmful to health and the environment. This choice is essential for us, because a healthy home begins with safe and ethically sourced materials.

"Our furniture is made to last, and that starts with a selection of quality raw materials that respect both the environment and the people who produce them."Anne-Sophie Musso

Rigorous quality control

We only collaborate with manufacturers who share our values and adhere to strict social and environmental standards. All our partners must pass BSCI social audits, achieving a minimum rating of C, guaranteeing ethical and safe working conditions for their employees. This isn't a minor detail; it's a fundamental requirement for us.

We have implemented a rigorous quality control process at every stage of manufacturing. Before onboarding a new supplier, we conduct factory inspections to ensure they meet our quality and ethical standards. Each piece of furniture undergoes multiple checks, from the prototype to final shipment. Nothing is left to chance, because we want every piece that leaves our workshops to meet our customers' expectations and embody the excellence we strive for.

"We want to be sure that every piece of furniture that leaves our workshops meets our high standards. We make no compromises on quality and ethics." – Anne-Sophie Musso

Our commitment to manufacturing is clear: to produce quality furniture while respecting the environment and the people involved in its creation. This is how we are building a responsible and committed brand that goes far beyond mere trends to embed its values in a sustainable and virtuous reality.

The new life of unsold goods: our partnership with Emmaus

The choice of Emmaus as a solidarity partner

At Nordlys, we believe that every piece of furniture deserves a second life. Our partnership with Emmaüs is much more than a simple gesture; it's a strong commitment to more responsible consumption and concrete support for people in need.

"Donating to Emmaus is not just about getting rid of furniture. It's about giving meaning and contributing to a solidarity economy that restores hope." according to Anne-Sophie Musso.

The choice of Emmaus was not made by chance. Anne-Sophie and her co-founders have long maintained a personal connection with this organization. We have always made regular donations and closely followed their work. We know their commitment, their transparency, and their real impact on the ground. It was natural for us to go further and integrate Emmaus into our furniture reuse initiative.

Beyond this personal connection, we were deeply moved by their mission. Helping families in difficulty and the homeless is a cause that resonates deeply with us.

Finally, choosing Emmaüs also meant choosing a recognized player: “We know that every piece of furniture we entrust to them is repaired, refurbished, or redistributed fairly and efficiently. We know that our donations have a tangible impact.” “We wanted our furniture to have a real impact. Emmaüs was the obvious choice, because we know that every item we give them will find a new home and fulfill a genuine need,” according to Anne-Sophie.

This partnership perfectly aligns with our commitment to a virtuous cycle, where every piece of furniture, every material, every resource is used to its fullest potential. It's not just about the circular economy; it's a philosophy of life that we wholeheartedly embrace.

What types of furniture do we donate and why?

We have put in place a structured donation process, which allows each piece of furniture to have a useful second life.

1️⃣ "Second choice" furniture
These pieces of furniture are customer returns. They sometimes have a minor manufacturing defect or were damaged during transport. Rather than storing or throwing them away, we decided to give them a second chance. According to Anne-Sophie Musso "A piece of furniture with a minor defect doesn't deserve to be discarded. Thanks to Emmaüs, it will find a passionate handyman or a buyer keen to give objects a second life."

2️⃣ Unsold items and old collections
Sometimes, certain pieces of furniture don't find a buyer. Rather than letting them sit in our warehouses, we prefer to donate them to Emmaus. These items are then adopted by families who need quality furniture at a lower cost.
"We want our creations to live in homes, not in a warehouse. Giving away our unsold items is a no-brainer," says Anne-Sophie.

Conclusion

By choosing Nordlys, you're not just choosing a piece of furniture. You're choosing a committed brand that places sustainability, social responsibility, and transparency at the heart of its business model. Every piece we design is conceived to minimize its environmental impact, promote responsible production, and contribute to a virtuous life cycle.

Our furniture is not disposable, but durable creations that stand the test of time, made with carefully selected materials and respectful processes. Our partnership with Emmaüs and our pre-order system are not isolated initiatives, but pillars of a broader vision: that of more conscious, more humane, and more respectful consumption.

Joining Nordlys means joining a movement where every purchase has meaning, where every piece of furniture tells a story and where every choice counts for a more responsible world.
